Understanding Pediatric Dental Emergencies

Kids are active, curious, and always on the move, so dental accidents and sudden tooth pain can happen at any time. A fall at the playground, a sports injury, or a cavity that was not causing problems before can quickly turn into an urgent situation. Knowing what to do and who to call helps you stay calm and gives your child the best chance of a good outcome.

Some dental problems need attention the same day, such as a knocked-out permanent tooth, a broken tooth, severe toothache, or swelling in the face or gums. Others can often wait for the next available appointment. When in doubt, call our office. Our team will ask a few questions, give you guidance on what to do right away, and schedule a same-day visit when your child needs one. If your child has a serious head injury, trouble breathing, or uncontrolled bleeding, go to the nearest emergency room or call 911.

When your child is hurting, every minute matters. Call our office and our team will help you understand what to do right away, from controlling bleeding to protecting a knocked-out tooth. We offer same-day emergency visits so your child can be seen as quickly as possible.

Comfort Comes First

An injury or sudden pain can be scary for kids and parents. We focus first on helping your child feel safe and relieving pain, then explain what we see in simple, friendly language. For children with anxiety, sensory sensitivities, or special health care needs, we adapt the visit to keep them as comfortable as possible.

Follow-Up and Prevention

After an emergency, we check how the injured tooth and the teeth around it are healing over time. We will let you know if your child needs follow-up visits and share tips to help prevent future injuries, such as wearing a mouthguard during sports.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Stay calm and check your child's mouth. For a knocked-out permanent tooth, pick it up by the top part, not the root, gently rinse it with water if it is dirty, and try to place it back in the socket. If that is not possible, keep the tooth in a cup of milk and call us right away. Time matters, so try to be seen as soon as possible. Do not try to put a knocked-out baby tooth back in, as this can harm the permanent tooth underneath.

For a broken tooth, rinse the mouth with warm water, save any pieces you can find, and use a cold compress on the outside of the face to reduce swelling. For bleeding, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze or a cloth. For a toothache, rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove any trapped food. Then call our office at (954) 358-9195 so we can guide you and schedule a same-day visit if your child needs one.

FAQs

Questions Parents Ask Us

What counts as a pediatric dental emergency?

Common dental emergencies include a knocked-out or broken tooth, severe tooth pain, swelling in the face or gums, a tooth that was pushed or loosened by an injury, and bleeding that does not stop. If you are not sure, call our office and we will help you decide.

Do you offer same-day emergency appointments?

Yes. We offer same-day emergency visits. Call our office at (954) 358-9195 and our team will help you as quickly as possible.

What should I do if my child knocks out a tooth?

If it is a permanent tooth, hold it by the top, gently rinse it with water, and try to place it back in the socket. If you cannot, keep it in milk and call us right away. Do not put a baby tooth back in, but still call us so we can check your child's mouth.

What should I do if my child breaks or chips a tooth?

Rinse your child's mouth with warm water, save any broken pieces, and apply a cold compress to the outside of the face to reduce swelling. Call our office so we can examine the tooth and recommend the right treatment.

When should I go to the emergency room instead?

Go to the nearest emergency room or call 911 if your child has a serious head injury, loses consciousness, has trouble breathing or swallowing, or has bleeding that will not stop. For tooth injuries and pain without these signs, call our office first.

How can I help prevent dental emergencies?

Have your child wear a mouthguard during sports, use car seats and seat belts properly, avoid chewing ice or hard candy, and keep up with regular checkups so small problems are treated before they become painful emergencies.
